THE WEEK IN FASHION: NOVEMBER 5th-9th

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

Drama is never far around the corner in the world of fashion and this week has been no different, with  plenty of glamour, rumour and quite frankly jaw dropping development. here's all you need to know...

The week's biggest story has been the news that Nicolas Ghesquière is to leave Balenciaga, effective from November 30th. Thus the rumour mill, which had been given a little respite in recent months following the appointment of Raf Simons at Dior and Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent, cranked up to full speed once more. Many, including Simon Chilvers at The Guardian, have expressed their desire to see Ghesquière take over from Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel as when the time comes. However, Lagerfeld himself has now put in his two pennies' worth, saying that it would be a good idea for Ghesquière to launch his own label, perhaps with the backing of LVMH. Meanwhile, a host of names have been suggested as possible replacements for Ghesquière, among them Christopher Kane, Joseph Altuzarra and Alexander Wang. This trio are already well on their way to establishing strong labels of their own and so may not want to abandon that mission for the Balenciaga job. Lesser known names in the mix include Kostas Murkidis, Boucha Jarrar and Ghesquière's current first assistant Natacha Ramsay. Of course, there is still the ongoing mystery surrounding Diego Della Valle's choice of designer to head up the revival of Schiaparelli, now scheduled for next year. LFW's very own Erdem is one of the favourites for that role. Never a dull moment.

It's been a big week for Rihanna. She accidentally leaked, via Instagram, a series of images of her and Kate Moss in a raunchtastic photo shoot for V magazine's March 2013 issue. Not that anyone's complaining...

The night before that little incident, RiRi took to the stage at the world famous annual Victoria's Secret Show in New York where she performed alongside the world's most in-demand top models, including Miranda Kerr, Doutzen Kroes and Alessandra Ambrosio. It was a big night for the Brits as well as Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne joined the line-up. The show lived up to its extravagant reputation, with a bra costing $2.5 million making it down the catwalk. The lingerie giant also donated $1 million to the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.

Finally, the wait is over. Admit it, you've been counting the days. Kardashian Kollection has hit the UK and is now for sale at good old Dorothy Perkins. Now we can *finally* get the Kim/ Khloe/ Kourtney look but what to choose? Something leopard print? Something fringed? Something lacy? I"ve a funny feeling the girls who have officially given the humble, mid-alphabet letter "K" a whole new lease of life might advise "All of it, all at once". Shop the Kollection here.

In other high street collection news, Debenhams is to revive the iconic label Ossie Clark, whose brilliantly printed (by Celia Birtwell), frilled, full-length gowns came to symbolise the romantic mood of  the 60s and 70s.  The jury's out on whether Debenhams can really do justice to Ossie's legacy. Look out for re-worked versions of original designs as well as new interpretations. Something tells me there'll never be anything quite like an Clark/ Birtwell original.

She's not the first and she won't be the last but Sienna Miller is the latest celebrity to be captured nude in the final stages of preganacy. She was painted by Jonathan Yeo who will exhibit the work at his upcoming I've Got You (Under My Skin) show in Berlin. Naturally, Miller looks incredible.

So, it turns out that Lana del Rey won't be the new face of Versace after last week's apparent clues that this would be songstress's next move. However, it seems that MIA could be in the line to work with the super glamorous Italian label, in what capacity is not yet clear apart from the fact that the singer otherwise known as Maya Arulpragasam has files on her computer containing "Versace outlines". Finally, a treat awaits us. Chanel model Gaspard Ulliel has been chosen to play Yves Saint Laurent in a new biopic of the designer's life. Fashion history and eye candy, bring it on. Happy Weekend!

RAVE RUNNING IN BERLIN WITH NIKE AND PAULA RADCLIFFE

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

Glowing and ready to rave run
Berlin's Brandenburg gate for the warm-up
Berlin has a bit of a rep as a party city, so while I may be in town for a fitness focused "36 hour Sports Experience" courtesy of Nike, they made sure we didn't miss out on the vibes by welcoming us last night with a rave run from Bradenburg Gate, weaving through the trees of Tiergarten long after sun down to our dinner venue. The route was lit by fluoro spotlights and glowsticks- it was really rather trippy. Boomboxes tied to tricycles rode beside us, blasting out techno tunes to keep us moving and even occasionally prompting a morph from run to dance, how could you not? If you ever thought running was boring or monotonous then a rave run will soon change your mind. You could create your own by running after dark, armed with glowsticks and house music on your iPod,  I know I will be.

There was an added frisson to all this excitement because we were joined by Paula Radcliffe. At Brandenburg Gate, the women's marathon world record holder led us all in a warm-up and motivational talk before we set out for our rave run through the park. Radcliffe is still recovering from the foot surgery which forced her to pull out of running at the London Olympics this summer. She's still confined to jogging in the sea near her Monaco home so a rave run was out of the question. However, Paula was there to join us for a delicious sushi dinner and preview of Nike's brand new Flyknit One+ style which is launching for Spring/ Summer.

Beautiful- the Flyknit One+
Nike have brought me, and a group of fellow European press, to Berlin to inspire us. As someone who  vividly remembers watching Paula set her marathon world record of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds at the London Marathon in 2003, it doesn't get more inspiring that getting to meet and chat to the woman who threw assumptions about what may or may not be possible for girls to achieve out of the window. And all just by putting her head down and running faster and longer than any female before her. Almost a decade later, no athlete has come close to Paula's achievement.

Me and Paula- just amazing
Given that London is such a special place for Paula, the city where she ran her record, it is hard to imagine what a wrench it must have been to forgo the chance the chance to compete in an Olympic marathon on home turf. Last night, she explained that "I know I wouldn't maybe have won but I would've loved the chance to run and do it", a sentiment which sums the sportmanship which she has always displayed. It's clear that Radcliffe's main motivation has always been a love of running, the fact of her being supremely talented a happy coincidence . She recalls the aftermath of a doctor's appointment in 1994 when she had been told that may never be able to run, let alone compete, again on her injured foot,"I remember my Dad saying 'millions of people don't run and they get through life' and I was thinking 'But I'm not millions of people'".  To think that 18 years later, it is that same foot injury which Paula has just received more treatment for is a pretty inspiring thing, to be that determined to stick at what you love in the face of that initial prognosis.

I very often hear girls saying that exercise isn't for them because of the sweating and general lack of glamour involved. When exercise is your career I suppose it could become rather difficult to find excuses to get dressed up. Paula proves that there are so many ways that you can use those rituals you might usually reserve for "dressing up" to improve your sporting performance. "I always have to wear a nail varnish when I race with a name that sounds fast" she tells me, "one year, I remember being in the MAC shop before the New York marathon and I had to call my friend to decide whether Fluid or Jet Flash sounded faster". Similarly, whereas we might have lucky shoes for big meetings or special lingerie for first dates, Paula is superstitious about her kit, "You get about five uniforms for the racing year, but if I race well in one then I stick with that for every other race". She is lucky too that the career of a sporting star involves plenty of opportunities for serious dressing up. "You spend a lot of time in tracksuits so it's nice to dress up. My wardrobe is kind of divided between Nike kit and evening dresses and not much in-between" which really doesn't sound so bad, does it?

There's little more inspiring than the chance to speak to your hero, but Paula also had some practical advice for getting your running to work for you, and don't forget, there's always the rave run...

PAULA RADCLIFFE'S THREE TIPS FOR GETTING INTO RUNNING:

1. Join a run club, it's unlikely everyone will be having an off day so if you need motivation you'll find it

2. Set intermediate goals to take you up to your main goal so that you're feeling good on the way and realise what you're achieving all the time.

3. Don't feel like you have to do something, find what you enjoy- whether that's running on a track or doing hills. It's your running"

CARVEN X PETIT BATEAU: DREAM COLLABORATORS

Posted by Bethan Holt, Fashion Junior at Large

36. That is the number is the number of Breton striped tops I own. So, logically I really have no need to be casting my eye over this latest, very exciting brand collaboration from Carven, one of the hottest design houses in Paris with Petit Bateau, purveyors of the ultimate striped tops and basics. But I am, and I want every piece, from the stripy body suit (obviously) to the cute little red dress and the genius white collar to tuck under a jumper without wearing a whole extra layer.
Carven x Petit Bateau collar- coming soon to FarFetch.com
Guillaume Henry, the designer who has breathed life and love back into Carven (and who the FashEd profiled here), has developed some unmistakable signatures during his three years at the house and those have translated perfectly into the Petit Bateau collaboration. The polo collars, pops of primary colours and chic neutrals all come together to form classic outfit building blocks, with a twist. The short little dresses will look equally sharp with tight and biker boots by day as they would with some WOW heels for a night out. I would wear the striped body with denim shorts in Summer  or under a pinafore dress for a more preppy look. As with as the very best wardrobe staples, the possibilities are virtually endless.

And there's more good news because we can now get our hands on the collaboration a month earlier than expected on FarFetch.com, whose partner, Concept Store Smets in Belgium are one of only three retailers to be stocking Carven x Petit Bateau for the next few weeks. The only bad news is that when I clicked through to buy, shipping costs were pretty steep at £16 so I suggest finding a few fellow keen purchasers and placing your oder together to split the shipping costs. From December 4th, the collection will be available at Petit Bateau stores.

BREAKING FASHION NEWS: NICOLAS GHESQUIERE LEAVING BALENCIAGA

PPR has this afternoon announced that Nicolas Ghesquière, who has been Creative Director at Balenciaga since 1997, will be leaving at the end of this month. Despite his long tenure, the news comes as something as a surprise after fashion's recent period of "musical chairs" seemed to have settled down. Indeed, amid the excitement of the debut collections from Raf Simons at Dior and Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent last month, Nicole Phelps ended her glowing review of Balenciaga SS13 with a statement underlining the house's importance in the Paris mix...

"What Ghesquière did today was a reminder to us all that Paris fashion isn't a two-man game."

Rumour has it that Ghesquière has been holed up in New York during the Sandy chaos and was spotted shopping in Barney's and "holding court in [the] tea room" (via @JillKargman). There has been plenty of praise for Ghesquière from key industry figures as news broke...

Thank you Nicolas for bringing back all Cristobal Balenciaga’s values and creativity. Read more:

Very depressing news for my well-off, fashionable fans of avant garde, conceptual French fashion: Nicolas Ghesquière to leave Balenciaga.

Nicolas Ghesquiere unarguably one of the biggest talents in fashion leaving Balenciaga where he has been incredible

There is already speculation that Stefano Pilati, who recently left Yves Saint Laurent and had landed a post at Ermenegildo Zegna might be a prime candidate to take the reins. Watch this space...
